About Toto
The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and their tour established them as a brand around the world.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on a recent tour.
